On Sunday 19nd March Wimbleball Sailing Club hosted the annual Exmoor
Beastie Pursuit. Sponsored by Exmoor Ales, this event comprises the final
leg of the new South West Series following events at Roadford and
With a weather forecast of westerly force 5 gusting 7, the race officer for the day expressed pleasure & surprise when paid up entries reached 25. By the time racing was due to start this had rissen to a total of 37 boats entered.
With reference to the conditions the race officer purposely set a course to avoid the windiest part of the lake (the east end of the bay opposite the club house).
At 12:00 the first boat away was Lars Selter in a Laser 4.7 followed by the Challenger of Val Millwarda some 8 minuits later. As the first boats headed south toward the dam the rest of the fleet following at intervals depending on their handicap.
Before the last boats to start, some 39 minuits later, the first casualties of the race were being recorded with boats going ashore to await the safety boats for a tow back or returning with equipment failure.
Before the end of the three hour pursuit race records show that nearly 40% of the original fleet retired with the boats making best progress being those that inspected the underside of their hulls the least. In the end it was the stability of the three hulls of the Challenger that paid off with Val Millward having a convincing lead at the end.
Thanks one again for Exmoor Ales for their support. Val said she was only here for the beer!
